Chapter 14: Revenge?
Neither Bing Wengu nor the original host, Bing Dalang, were willing to talk to the villagers.
Bing Wengu was indifferent, caring for no one. He didn’t care if others lived or died. Even if someone died right before his eyes, he would remain unmoved.
Bing Dalang, on the other hand, looked down on people from the core of his being, especially these farmers who toiled in the fields. They were uneducated, uncultured, crude, and mannerless, always nitpicking over trivial matters. They weren’t from his world, and mixing with them would only drag him down.
Bing Wengu had no intention of changing this. He gave a sharp shake of his shoulder, and without much effort, he sent the women who had been reaching for the roe deer stumbling back.
The women were jolted by a strong force, and after barely regaining their balance, they angrily shouted, "Bing Dalang, what's wrong with you? You almost made me fall..."
Before she could finish, she locked eyes with Bing Wengu’s icy, emotionless gaze. Those cold eyes stared at them, not as if looking at living beings, but rather at lifeless objects, like weeds by the roadside or the dead roe deer on his shoulder.
The woman shivered under Bing Wengu’s cold gaze, a chill creeping through her limbs.
Everyone froze under Bing Wengu’s icy glare, and for a moment, no one dared to breathe. Bing Wengu ignored them and carried the roe deer back to the Bing household, the crowd watching in fearful silence.
Qian Shi, spotting the roe deer on Bing Wengu’s shoulder, waddled over with her big belly, beaming with delight. "Big brother, what did you catch? A roe deer? Was it heavy? Let me take it—don’t strain your scholar’s back."
Liang Shi and Bing’s father rushed out at the noise and saw the roe deer sprawled in the yard. Everyone’s mouths watered at the sight.
Liang Shi was tempted too but still scolded. "Da Lang, you’ve just recovered. I told you not to go into the mountains. Why did you still go? What if something happened to you?"
Bing Wengu cut her off, his voice icy despite his efforts to control it. "Mother, come inside. I need to ask you something."
Seeing her son’s terrifying expression, Liang Shi didn’t dare to ask more and obediently followed Bing Wengu into the house.
"Mother, what happened at the Nan family today? Tell me everything." As soon as they entered, Bing Wengu got straight to the point.
Liang Shi finally understood her son’s terrifying expression—it was all about Nan Jia Xiao Geer.
Liang Shi thought her son was too fixated on Nan Jia Xiao Geer, more than just a lifesaver deserved. She advised, "Da Lang, you know how poor we are. If you really care about Nan Jia Xiao Geer, then..."
"Mother, I need to know what exactly happened today. Tell me everything," Bing Wengu said, his tone even but chilling.
Liang Shi recounted what she knew, adding, "I wasn’t home. I heard it from the neighbors later."
Her voice trailed off as she caught a flicker of crimson in her son’s eyes.
At that moment, Bing Wengu looked like a beast ready to attack, as if he might lunge at anyone. It was truly terrifying.
Liang Shi feared Bing Wengu might grab a knife and slaughter the women who’d gossiped about Nan Jia Xiao Geer. Trembling, she pleaded, "Da Lang, you must stay calm. Those women were already beaten badly by the Nan family. They've already been punished."
"Mm, I understand. Mother, you can go now," Bing Wengu’s voice was calm, but it was the calm before the storm.
As soon as Liang Shi left Bing Wengu’s room, Qian Shi shamelessly approached her. "Mother, should we cook some of the roe deer that big brother brought back tonight?"
"Eat, eat, eat! Is that all you think about? Don't you know we're out of food at home? Save it for tomorrow and let your big brother take it to town to trade for grain. We have no food left at home," Liang Shi glared at Qian Shi.
Inside the room, Bing Wengu stood in front of the bronze mirror and noticed faint flickers of crimson in his eyes. He looked like a demon who had just crawled out of hell, truly terrifying.
He couldn’t see his husband like this; it would surely scare him. He would have to wait until he calmed down.
At night, just as Bing Wengu opened the door to leave, a woman’s voice called out from behind, "Da Lang, it's so late. Where are you going?"
Bing Wengu recognized the voice as Liang Shi's. It seemed that during the day, Liang Shi had noticed something was off with him and, fearing he might do something drastic, had deliberately kept watch over him.
Bing Wengu, used to being alone in the interstellar realm and having held a high position for over two hundred years, didn't like others meddling in his decisions. Even if that person was his family, after all, in this interstellar age, his true family would never attempt to interfere with his decisions.
Without turning his head, Bing Wengu said, "Mom, don't follow me. I'm just going out to use the bathroom."
There was a toilet at home, so he could have used it. Liang Shi wanted to say this, but before she could, Bing Wengu had already vanished. Liang Shi chased after him, but outside it was pitch black, and Bing Wengu was nowhere to be seen.
Liang Shi didn't dare make a sound and could only return home, anxiously waiting half the night until Bing Wengu finally returned.
Hearing the noise, Liang Shi quickly got up and threw on some clothes. The first thing she did was check Bing Wengu for any signs of a scuffle.
Not seeing any injuries on Bing Wengu, Liang Shi then listened carefully to the sounds of the village. The village was completely silent, and only then did Liang Shi breathe a sigh of relief.
Unfortunately, Liang Shi's relief was short-lived. The next day, when she went out to wander around the village, she heard the villagers discussing Zhang Li Shi and Zhao Wang Shi.
It was said that one had accidentally fallen and lost a tooth during the night, while the other had slipped and fallen into the cesspit while using the toilet. Although she was unharmed when rescued, she still reeked, and her ankle was twisted.
Listening to the women's animated gossip about these two families, Liang Shi's heart raced.
Zhang Li Shi and Zhao Wang Shi were two of the women who had gossiped about Nan Jia Xiao Geer, and they were the ones who had spoken the least. Now, one had lost a tooth, and the other had twisted her ankle.
What about the other two main gossips? Liang Shi shuddered, not daring to think about it.
The villagers, unaware of the hidden entanglements between Bing Wengu and Nan Jinping, thought it was all just accidents.
But Liang Shi thought otherwise. She vaguely guessed that there was more to their interactions than what was visible on the surface; otherwise, her Da Lang wouldn't have gone so crazy.
Liang Shi returned home in fear and trembling, intending to ask Bing Wengu for clarification, but found him gone.
A sense of foreboding washed over her, and her eyelids twitched uncontrollably.
Without a second thought, Liang Shi turned around and ran towards the village, searching frantically for Bing Wengu.
She turned the village upside down, even checking the mouse holes, but still couldn't find him.
