Chapter 95
Danger
"Qianqian," Jiang ignored the dark glare behind her and whispered, "There’s something off about Feng Wu. The money I gave him should’ve been spent long ago. Now he’s carrying a stack of cash—definitely shady."
Lin Nannan, recalling Feng Wu’s strange behavior, pressed, "How did you two meet?"
Jiang spilled everything, explaining how Feng Wu had approached her first, then love-bombed her, gaslighting her until she even fought with her family over him.
Hearing this, Lin Nannan said firmly, "We gotta go back to the guesthouse and tell your brother. See what he thinks."
"Ah, why tell my brother?" Jiang asked, puzzled.
"Are you kidding me? You’re just a young girl. Why would someone target you unless they wanted something from you? Your family’s not rich enough to be a mark, so the only connection is your cousin." Lin spelled it out plainly.
The Jiang family had nothing enticing, so the only reason Jiang was targeted was Lu Hang—her cousin, who was on a covert op but got betrayed.
If true, they’d go to any lengths. The Lu family was all in the village, with Lu Yuan and Lu Ming staying home, leaving no easy targets. So, they went after Jiang, who was related.
Realizing Jiang might have been dragged into this because of Lu Hang, Lin felt a pang of sympathy for her.
This was sheer bad luck.
Jiang’s jaw dropped in shock. "Sister-in-law, you mean… Feng Wu did all this because of my cousin?"
"Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure!"
"That asshole played me!" Jiang gritted her teeth in fury.
She could tolerate being fooled, but she wouldn’t allow anyone to use her to harm her cousin.
Her hero—no one was allowed to hurt him.
"We gotta go back—now!" Lin suddenly felt a sense of impending danger, kicking herself for leaving Lu Hang alone at the guesthouse.
She was uneasy.
"What about dinner?" Jiang asked.
Lin quickened her pace. "We’ll grab something downstairs at the guesthouse!"
Jiang agreed, also worried about her cousin. She immediately ran ahead.
When they reached the guesthouse entrance, Lin told Jiang to buy food while she went inside…
The moment she stepped in, the iron tang of blood hit her, and her expression darkened.
She sprinted over and saw the young girl who had greeted them earlier lying in a pool of blood, unconscious.
No time to think—she charged upstairs…
*Crash!* She kicked open the door to find the room in chaos. Zhang Xiaofeng was knocked out on the floor, while Lu Ming and Lu Fang were fighting desperately, already injured.
Her sudden appearance made everything freeze for a heartbeat before one of the hitmen went for her.
Without mercy, Lin threw a haymaker, sending the man flying backward with a scream. He slammed into the floor—*thud*—motionless.
The sudden violence shook the hitmen. Abandoning Lu Fang and Lu Ming, they zeroed in on Lin Nannan. She fought back ruthlessly—one punch, one KO. Ribs shattered—gruesome.
"Spare their lives!" Lu Hang, seeing Lin Nannan could handle it, sighed in relief. Seeing the girl was in a bloodlust, he quickly reminded her.
The blow instantly swelled their face grotesquely, rendering it unrecognizable, after the fist originally aimed at the assailant's head abruptly changed course upon hearing Lu Hang's words, landing squarely on their face instead.
In no time, Lin Nannan took them all down. While they writhed on the ground, she rushed to Zhang Xiaofeng’s side. Feeling her neck for a pulse and noting the large lump on her forehead—clearly struck when opening the door—but confirmed she was out of mortal danger.
"Nan Nan, how’s your mom?" Lu Fang asked anxiously.
"She’s okay, just knocked out. She’ll wake up soon!" Lin Nannan reassured before asking, "Dad, A Ming, how are you two?"
"We’re okay!" Lu Fang clutched his wounded arm, shuddering at the close call. "Good thing you showed up. Otherwise, we’d have been finished."
Assured of their safety, Lin Nannan approached the bed and asked Lu Hang, "Were you hurt?"
Lu Hang shook his head. "They never got near me. By the way, why did you come back?"
Mom said she and Qian Qian went to dinner, so he hadn’t expected her return—let alone so timely.
"Something felt off," she explained. "The guy with Qian Qian was obviously shady. Since you’re the only reason anyone would target her, I knew something was wrong and rushed back."
Lu Hang hadn’t anticipated this. His expression darkened.
"They’ll stop at nothing!"
Because he no longer interacted with outsiders, and his family had heeded his warnings to avoid strangers, they’d turned their sights on Qian Qian instead.
He’d gotten her involved.
"What do you think?" Lin Nannan asked.
Lu Hang met her gaze. "What do you think?"
Lin Nannan smiled faintly, then tilted her head. "Do we get a reward if we catch the traitor?"
"Reward?"
"Yeah. We’re broke, right? Isn’t this a way to earn some?" she pressed.
Lu Hang couldn’t help but laugh despite the gravity. "There might be, but I don’t know the specifics."
"No big deal. Any cash is good—I’ll take it!" With that, she eyed the groaning men on the floor and instructed Lu Fang and A Ming, "Dad, A Ming, find ropes and tie them up. Then report this. The girl downstairs... she’s probably dead."
The surviving assailants paled at her words.
"Nan Nan, go find A Zhang. Calling the cops won’t do any good," Lu Hang said.
"I’ll go!" Lu Fang offered. "Let Nan Nan stay here to protect you. I know how to find A Zhang."
He’d delivered supplies to Lu Hang’s unit before, so he knew the way.
Lu Hang nodded. "Dad, stay where there’s people."
"Got it."
After Lu Fang took off, Lin Nannan carried her mother-in-law to a chair to rest, then bound the surviving attackers with ropes. She was freakishly strong—every yank made them howl yet they had no choice but to endure. The racket finally woke Zhang Xiaofeng.
Holding her pounding head, she felt dizzy. The trashed room made her heart stop until she spotted her son safe in bed, letting out a relieved breath.
"Ah—!" Jiang Qianqian, clueless about the mess downstairs, walked in and screamed her head off at the scene before her...
