Chapter 57
Lin Nannan Strikes Back
The more they talked, the more excited they became, hoping to make Lin Nannan cry. But instead of crying or getting angry, she called them ugly, which immediately set them fuming.
"Who’s ugly? You’re the idiot! You’re the ugly one! Ugly people are always making trouble, thinking a new outfit makes you look good." She burned with jealousy—why did Lin Nannan, married to a paralyzed man, get new clothes while her perfectly healthy husband never gave her any?
The unfairness of it burned her up.
Lin Nannan thought they were being ridiculous. Watching their furious expressions, she asked in confusion, "What business is it of yours if I have new clothes? Did my mom or my aunt steal from your homes for them?"
Originally, she only had ill-fitting clothes. But after coming to the Lu family, they took pity on her, so Zhang Xiaofeng and Pan Xiaoping promptly made her two new outfits and repurposed the clothes she couldn’t wear. That’s why she wore new clothes even when working in the fields, which stood out and rubbed people the wrong way.
But she didn’t think she was in the wrong. The Lu family had no complaints, so others could keep their opinions to themselves.
The group was left speechless, realizing Lin Nannan’s remarks could truly infuriate people.
Despite their mockery, Lin Nannan didn’t get angry. They had hoped she’d make a scene so the Lu family would grow tired of her—after all, when a fool caused trouble, others had to apologize.
But to their surprise, Lin Nannan didn’t cause a fuss. Instead, she shot back, leaving them speechless.
"Hmph! Lu Hang is paralyzed and bedridden. Why are you strutting around the village?" One of them blurted out a slanderous remark in the heat of the moment.
The others nodded in agreement.
"Exactly! What’s a fool putting on airs for?"
Without giving Lin Nannan a chance to speak, they took turns berating her until her fists clenched in anger.
Just then, a man in a white shirt with refined features approached. "What’s going on here?"
Everyone turned to look, their expressions varied, while Lin Nannan squinted...
"A Lin, what brings you here?" The woman who had first attacked Lin Nannan immediately smiled and boldly took his arm, subtly making it clear they were a couple.
"I couldn’t find you at home, so I came looking," A Lin explained, then glanced around. "What’s happening here?"
"It’s Lin Nannan. We just complimented her clothes and asked who made them, and she rudely accused us of trying to steal them!" A Qin jumped in with false accusations.
Lin Nannan watched A Lin, waiting to see how he’d respond.
A Lin was also from the village, but his family was better off, and he was used to being spoiled and fawned over.
Hearing A Qin’s words, he gave Lin Nannan a disdainful look and said, "Why bother arguing with a fool? Doesn’t that make you look foolish too? The Lu family really should keep their idiot locked up—who knows when she’ll start biting people!"
He was calling Lin Nannan a dog—harsh and cruel.
A Qin and the others saw nothing wrong with his words. Instead, they admired A Lin for standing up for them.
Under the girls’ adoring gazes, A Lin got even more full of himself, spouting arrogant nonsense that dragged both Lin Nannan and Lu Hang through the mud.
Lin Nannan’s indifferent expression changed when A Lin insulted Lu Hang. Squinting, she suddenly cut in while A Lin was holding forth, "Brother A Lin, which one do you like better—the mole on A Qin’s [specific body part] or the one on my butt?"
Everyone froze. The voice sounded uncannily like A Tao’s. She added, mimicking A Tao's tone.
