Chapter 27
Han Li’s Arrest
"That backstabbing ingrate!" Lin Donglai fumed with rage.
During the toughest days of harvest season every year, the entire family would toil under the sun until their skin peeled, suffering like hell, while Lin Nannan frolicked in the mountains without lifting a damn finger to help.
They used to think she was dumb, and as long as she didn’t stir up trouble, it didn’t matter if she didn’t eat the family’s food. But who would’ve guessed she had been playing the fool to hide her strength?
Old Mrs. Lin said with a venomous glare as she watched Lin Nannan swinging her hoe effortlessly, chatting and laughing with others: "A married daughter shouldn’t only care about her husband’s family and neglect her own. That’s something that’ll make people curse her behind her back."
At her words, the entire Lin family turned their attention to the old woman.
"Ma, we already said we’d cut ties with her!" Lin Donglai frowned.
Though he resented Lin Nannan, he didn’t want to provoke Lu Hang, that useless cripple from the Lu family.
"Even family members clash sometimes. A family quarrel—who takes it seriously?" she said, her voice dripping with calculation.
Lin Donglai knew his mother well. She wouldn’t say such things unless there was something to gain. He leaned in and asked, "Ma, aren’t you afraid of being dragged down by Lu Hang?"
Old Mrs. Lin sneered. "I was wrong before. With so many people in the Lu family, there’s no way we’d be the ones burdened. And didn’t you hear the village chief yesterday? Military personnel will send people over in a few days. Do you think they’re just coming for a visit?"
"Ma, are you saying… they’re delivering supplies or cash for Lu Hang?" Lin Donglai’s eyes lit up instantly.
"Whether they are or not, with that brute strength of hers, we can’t afford to sever ties with her." Old Mrs. Lin said fiercely, "We didn’t raise her for nothing."
If Lin Nannan dared to act clueless with them, then she shouldn’t blame them for being ruthless.
In others’ eyes, Lin Nannan was someone she had saved—she was indebted to the Lins.
The rest of the Lins agreed with the old woman’s plan. Seeing Lin Nannan’s strength, they had no intention of cutting ties with her either.
With that kind of labor during planting or harvest season, they wouldn’t have to suffer like they had in previous years.
Lin Qingqing’s eyes lit up with excitement when she heard her grandmother’s words.
She knew exactly how ruthless the old woman could be—this time, Lin Nannan wouldn’t get away with it.
The Lins had grand plans, but they forgot one thing: Lin Nannan was now part of the Lu family, no longer someone they could boss around.
…
By the time the two acres of land were plowed and ready for sowing, trouble struck the Han family.
For days, Lin Nannan had turned a blind eye to everything else, focused solely on getting the fields planted as quickly as possible. She hadn’t so much as glanced at Lu Hang, let alone inquired about He Ye’s arrest.
So, after finishing her meal and preparing to plant the seeds she had taken from her space, a sudden commotion in the distance caught the Lu family’s attention. Everyone stood up, curious about what was happening.
Lu Ming, being young and quick, dashed out to investigate. He returned moments later, panting, and announced, "Grandma, Dad, Ma—Old Han’s been arrested!"
"Old Han? Who the heck is that?" Lin Nannan asked, puzzled.
"Han Yan’s dad," Zhang Xiaofeng explained before immediately asking, "What happened? Did you find out why?"
Lu Ming shook his head. "I ran back as soon as I heard."
First, He Ye was arrested and hadn’t returned, and now Han Li was taken too. Something was seriously off. The Lu family couldn’t stay put—everyone got up and hurried outside…
After a moment’s thought, Lin Nannan decided to follow and get in on the action.
Villagers loved a spectacle, and in no time, a mob had formed outside the Han family’s door.
